In October 1957, the Soviet Union launched the earth's first satellite, Sputnik 1. Ever since that momentous day in October 1957, mankind has launched into temporary or permanent orbit a multitude of different spacecraft. In the 1960s weather satellites gave meteorologists their first opportunity to view the atmosphere from above and to recognize new weather patterns and interrelationships. The American body responsible for atmospheric research, the NOAA (National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration) maintains several satellites that may be used by researchers from around the world for research. Sebastian used data from the AVHRR (the Advanced Very High Resolution Radiometer) to conduct a series of cloud observations and devised his own software to catalogue all the various data.
